The Editorial Assistant directly assists the Editorial Director and interacts with all members of the childrens department in the acquisition and creation of fiction, non-fiction, novelty, and educational product. He or she also works closely with the sales, managing editorial, production, and marketing teams at every step in the publishing process. Additionally, The Editorial Assistant also corresponds with authors and illustrators regarding details of acquisition titles.

Essential Functions

• Assists Editorial Director by organizing calendar, documenting expenses, and fulfilling any requested responsibilities on specific acquisition titles.
• Facilitates the flow of processes for the children’s department. This includes entering and organizing data using the primary software applications of the company, increasing the efficiency and accuracy of departmental communication, as well as routing physical materials.
• Handles high volume of unsolicited manuscript submissions.
• Drafts correspondence on behalf of children’s department to authors, agents, and other third parties.
• Organizes departmental meetings and creates agendas for these meetings.
• Directs co-edition partners in the scheduling and delivery of materials to department.
• Coordinates with Editorial Director and other members of the children’s department to create new acquisition programs or titles.
• Acts as acquiring editor on select titles, and edits manuscripts for content and style.


• 4 year college degree or equivalent work experience.
• Experience working within editorial departments in book publishing, either as an intern or in an assistant role.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel.
• Exceptional writing skills & attention to detail.
• Strong interpersonal and organization skills are essential.
• Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
