As the senior manager, retail store operations you support the stores by managing a team of operators and specialists, focused on removing obstacles to ensure our stores can complete work easily and efficiently to provide customers with a great shopping experience. You act as a liaison between the stores and the Home Office teams, working to make sure that the workload is understood and optimized for efficiency, and is clearly communicated to the stores. You influence all store-level operations and systems, provide workforce planning and identify cost-reduction opportunities.

Essential Functions

• Act as a project manager for the Store Communications & Operations teams to participate and drive the strategic direction of store process, communication and system development.
• Lead cross-functional working groups, managing the operations calendar and advising other business unit partners and merchants on the most effective methods and timing to implement new or changing businesses.
• Drive the ongoing evolution of Integrated Store Operations (ISO) to reflect the most efficient, cost-effective operating principles.
• Lead the ongoing development and implementation of the scheduling and workforce management application.
• Select, train, motivate and develop store operations and workforce team to reach their fullest potential and to reflect the communications culture of Barnes & Noble.
• Provide short- and long-term workforce impact, freight, and reporting analysis and assessments for rollouts, projects, and other assignments.
• Identify opportunities for, assess and recommend ideas for, and develop system enhancements to drive sales and efficiency in stores.
• Manage the prioritization and design of store systems enhancements, guaranteeing that systems properly align with ISO processes and principles.
• Manage the coordination of rollout and communications plans for store systems enhancements including but not limited to: BookMaster, POS, PDTs, WFM, etc.


• Strong oral and written communication skills. Flexible and adaptable to the changing needs of the business.
• Manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and possess strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills, relationship-building and customer service skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• This position requires the manager to be accessible and on-call to stores 24/7.
• Barnes & Noble stores are located in all 50 states, requiring the manager to travel occasionally to meetings and stores, potentially using various forms of transportation.
• At least three years of store experience, and five years of project management experience.
• At least five years of management experience, including managing a team.
• Bachelor’s degree.
