As the Associate Buyer you are responsible for assisting the Buyer with the merchandising, planning, and managing product categories across all retail stores,, and two distribution centers. You assist the buyer in analyzing consumer buying patterns and reacting to trends by adjusting assortments and working with publishers to influence content of future books by category (depth and breadth of publishing, cover design, and interiors). You meet regularly with sales representatives, supporting the buyer with terms negotiations, and assisting in driving the overall business strategy with each publishing house.

Position Responsibilities:
Reports on sales performance and provides recommendations for driving additional sales and market share opportunities
Monitors inventory levels and provides reporting and recommendations for assortment adjustments
Coordinates execution of merchant led tasks with internal cross-functional partners and vendors
Assists the Buyer and Childrens Department management team in planning and executing marketing and promotional strategies across all channels, including hind-sighting past promotional performance
Works with vendors to ensure consistent communication of business needs and driving execution of overall business strategy
Calculates and executes allocations
Ensures timely completion of deliverables for Buying office
Manages select reporting and analysis across Childrens Department

Essential Functions

• Able to work independently and thrive in a multi-tasked, fast-paced, highly operationally complex environment with an area of responsibility that spans an incredibly high breadth of titles.
• Keen understanding of retail distribution, allocation, planning, and store operation practices
• Must have strong presentation skills and have presented strategies to executive team regularly
• Strong internal relationship management experience across all functional areas
• Strong analytical skills and forecasting ability (quantitative and qualitative)
• Excellent organizational, presentation, and communication skills
• Highly capable of creating and analyzing statistical and financial reports related to merchandise issues
• Keen understanding of the market in assigned areas of responsibility
• Proficiency in all Microsoft applications, highly proficient in Microsoft Excel
• Proven track record of process and efficiency improvements
• Works well under deadlines, self-starter, team-oriented and customer-focused


• At least 3 years’ experience in merchandise buying office, including merchandise selection and execution experience. Children & YA direct buying responsibility is strongly preferred.
• At least 1 years’ experience with bottom line responsibility for sales, margin, markdowns, and inventory management. Merchandise Planning, Allocation & Store Planning experience is a plus.
• Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or Liberal Arts
